I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2016 when I was 19 years old. After 6 months of being diagnosed and facing many new challenges, I decided type 1 diabetes was not going to control my life nor was I going to let it control anyone else's. Alongside Dr. John Purcell, an Endocrinologist in North Florida, I started T1insulin, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The mission of T1insulin was to provide a free service to individuals and families who deal with type 1 diabetes, by providing a proactive listening ear. I worked with Baptist Hospital and their staff to better understand the educational processes in place for newly diagnosed patients at Baptist hospitals and I connected with the local JDRF chapter to expand my horizon and better understand the impact that type 1 diabetes has on local communities. I had the privilege to build many relationships with individuals and families who deal with type 1 diabetes and those experiences will stay with me for life. Although I have taken a step back from T1insulin for the time being, to focus on my own health, I still make an active effort to produce helpful video guides for fellow type 1 diabetics.
